Institute of Electrical Engineering (IEE), Chinese academy of sciences (CAS), was established formally in 1963.The institute, located in the center of Zhongguancun Science Park, Beijing, is the only one institute in CAS, and also the pioneer in China, engaging in the research of electrical engineering. According to the national requirement and the academic subject development, currently, there are seven major research directions in IEE, including Renewable Energy Resources, New Power Technology, Modern Electrical Drive, Applied Superconductivity, Biomedical Engineering, Micro-nano Fabrication Technology, and the Frontiers in Electrical Engineering.

IEE has obtained plenty of project funds from NSFC, 973 & 863 National High Tech Programs, National Key Technologies R & D Programs, and various kinds of funds from other national ministries and CAS. International cooperation is also carried out widely between IEE and many foreign research organizations. About 500 scientific and technical payoffs have been achieved by IEE. The researchers in IEE have published dozens of special books and more than 1000 papers.

As one of the first approved academic degrees awarding organizations, IEE has the qualification to recruit and cultivate students for Master and Ph.D. degrees in the first-level discipline “electrical engineering”. The second-level disciplines include Theory of Electrical Engineering and New Technology, Electrical Machine and Apparatus, High Voltage and Insulation Technology, Power Electronics and Electric Drive, Power System and Its Automation, Bioelectrical Engineering, and Micro-nano Electrical Engineering and Technology. A postdoctoral research station is established in the first-level discipline “electrical engineering” with the approval by the national ministry of personnel. During the past 20 years, several hundred graduates have been awarded Ph.D. or Master degrees by promotion in IEE.

IEE has good research environment and excellent graduate supervisors. And various kinds of fellowships and allowances for research assistant positions are provided in IEE to help the students to finish their promotions.
