Evaporative cooling technology in hydro-generators
Based on long-term requirements of Chinese electric power industry, IEECAS has been researching the evaporative cooling technology of large electric machines since the late of 1950s. By independent innovation, it has developed the closed-loop, self-circulating system for hydro-generators using high insulating fluids as coolant. Cooperated with Donfang Electrical Machinery Works, this unique cooling method was successfully applied to several industrial projects.

10 MW, 50 MW and 400 MW evaporative cooling hydro-generators developed by IEECAS

Characteristics of self-circulating evaporative cooling method
The self-circulation cooling system (no pumps) was achieved under low pressure and low temperature rise. It has self-adaptive ability relating to different heat loads.
High reliability and high efficiency of generators are obtained.
It is preferable for large capacity hydro-generators.
International competitive ability of domestic enterprises was promoted
Demonstrative evaporative cooling hydro-generators
a) 10 MW evaporative cooling hydro-generator in Dazhai hydro- power station of Yunnan province in 1983.
b) 50 MW evaporative cooling hydro-generator in Ankang Huo- shiyan hydropower station of Shan’xi province in 1992.
c) 400 MW evaporative cooling hydro-generator in Lijiaxia hydro- power station of Qinghai province in 1999.
Evaporative cooling technology in turbine generators
Cooperated with Beijing Power Generation Facilities Manufactory, a 1.2 MVA fully infused evaporative cooling turbine generator was developed successfully in 1976. IEECAS has been promoted to a global pioneer of evaporative cooling technology since then. Through many year’s researches and practices, IEECAS, together with Shanghai Electric Machinery Company, accomplished the research of a 50 MW evaporative cooling turbine generator, which was a national industrial experimental project of the seventh five-year plan. Above achievements established foundation for further development of large capacity turbine generators.

Characteristics ofturbine generators with evaporative cooling technology
The features of evaporative cooling technology in turbine generators are on many aspects, for example, the coolant has super insulating properties, the cooling effect is perfect and the stator’s temperature rises along axial and circumferential directions are low-valued and well-distributed. Above merits promote the reliability of generators effectively.
