Prof. Gu Guobiao was born in Shanghai in 1936. He graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1958. Prof. Gu is currently a PhD candidate’s supervisor in the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (Hereinafter as IEECAS). He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1997.

Prof. Gu has many achievements in his former research activities. He is the awardee of the following prizes and awards: Chinese science and technology conference prize, two silver medals of the national science and technology achievements prize, two golden medals and one silver medal of the science and technology achievements prize awarded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Moreover, he has five invention patents and over fifty publications.

Prof. Gu has been engaging in the research and industrialization of evaporative cooling technology in large electric machines during his over forty year’s career. He studied evaporative cooling systems theoretically and experimentally, including different boiling point of coolant, recycling principle and cooling structure. Cooperated with his partners, Prof. Gu established the theory of normal-temperature self-recycling evaporative cooling technology.

Prof. Gu devotes himself to the industrialization of evaporative cooling technology. Cooperated with several enterprises, he designed and manufactured five evaporative cooling generators, such as 1.2 MVA turbine generator in which both stator and rotor were cooled by evaporative cooling technology, 50 MW turbine generator in which stator was cooled by evaporative cooling technology, and 10 MW, 50 MW, 400 MW hydro-generators in which stators were cooled by evaporative cooling technology.
